- Alain A. Abehsera

Still à choisir ce mot.

SPECIAL REPORT : WHAT NAME FOR WHAT KIND OF OSTEOPATHY ?

Diseases of the bone or the bones of disease ?- Alain A. Abehsera

Summary

Until now, the osteopathic profession, whether in Europe or in America, was able to grow discreetly, far from the critical eyes of Science. Under the shades of this anonymity, its claims and internal conflicts could go unverified. In the last two decades, our profession has become brutally exposed, even legitimised. We now have to give - or will have to give, in the near future dear answers to the scientific and lay public. Who are we ? How do we treat ? What makes our difference ? The author notes two fundamental challenges. First, the very meaning of the name « osteopathy ». Does it imply that we deal, mainly, with the treatment of « bone diseases » ? Many osteopaths, following Still, claim that we are a « general medicine ». How do these practitioners understand the word « osteopathy » ?Second, osteopathy is increasingly dividing into two groups that understand and mix with each other less and less : the « structural » and « cranial » groups. The first seem to gravitate towards a form of « osteopathy-disease of the bones » ; and, as such, are gaining increasing recognition from the medical establishment. The second claim to offer an « osteopathy-general medicine »,and as such, offer a dear threat to regular physicians.

The author reviews here the origins of osteopathy : the choice of the name by A.T. Still, the principles and practice. It seems that the present divisions of our profession were already present in Still’s own understanding, and are obvious in his choice of the name « osteopathy ». This word is deliberately ambiguous and should be read both ways : « disease of the bones » and « bone of diseases ». Still was looking for the essence of disease, for its skeleton. « Osteopathy » is, thus, one of the most ambitions names ever coined. Will we be up to standard ? If we want to keep that name, we will have to decide which reading we are interested in : diseases of the bones, bone of diseases ? We will then have to adapt our behaviour, our teaching and our research accordingly.

Key words : diseases of skeleton, skeleton of disease, « structural », « cranial », bone setting, healing

Sense and essence, Pierre Tricot

Summary

Is the word « osteopathy », coined by A.T Still at the end of the 19th century to name that Science, the most appropriate today to name our art ? Some people express doubts and, like Alain Abehsera, suggest that the name must be changed, pointing out that at best « osteopathy » denotes « the bone (backbone ?) of disease », and at worst « disease of the bones ».

Before making any comment on this issue, one must examine the various parts of the word « osteopathy ».This presupposes doing some research into its etymology - so as to elucidate how the word was derived from Greek and to analyse its various meanings - then going over historical data to establish the factors and reasons that made A.T. Still choose this word. That is what Pierre Tricot endeavours to do in this article, he then considers the positive and negative aspects of the term concluding with a brief study of the names of two disciplines closely related to osteopathy : chiropractic and etiopathy.

The author then points out that a name, no matter how appropriate, could never fully render such a wide and complex notion as that of osteopathy, and that over the last hundred years the name « osteopathy » has acquired a spiritual dimension as well as becoming pregnant with meaning. Even if today many people in Europe and France don’t quite comprehend the full scope of the term « osteopathy », they all have a vague idea, which suffices to identify the word and the field it refers to. Moreover, it is this term, chosen by Still, that we have been given. One can only imagine how difficult it would be to agree on another one ! Finally, changing the name doesn’t mean that people would understand any better what it referred to, and it would also become necessary to redo ail the word identification and recognition work which has already been accomplished.
