SUMMARY

In order to define the consequences of bipedalism on the conformation and physiology of the clavicle, the author presents a bibliography. After presenting the archaic, embryonic and anatomic thoracic girdle, the study explores the assumptions concerning the existence and the modifications of the clavicle.
Secondly, the author draws from the above study some practical osteopathic principles in order to confront them with the practise of osteopathy. If the vertical position is not the only reason for the presence of the collar-bone, the straightening of the upper body is an essential evolutionary stage in the liberation of the superior body part from its locomotive role.
The osteopathic care of the clavicle should be considered only as a bony part in the thoracic girdle, a true crossroads between the arm, the thorax and cephalic lever.
